Project outline:

The Healthy Waterways Community Research project was identified at a local community scale by local monitoring volunteers, Catchment/Landcare Groups, technical experts and community environmental organisations as a distinct, high priority, high profile, aquatic ecosystem and opportunity to address water quality and biodiversity concerns.

The aim of the project is to utilise aquaponic units with supporting native vegetation to absorb nutrients from the water column that have potential to cause blue-green algae blooms. The project will be supported by regular water quality monitoring to ascertain the successfulness of the project.

The project aims to engage the local hgih school (in the design & construction of the aquaponic units), SLCMA Community Nursery and Volunteer Program (for native seedlings) and volunteers from the Healthy Waterways Volunteer Network to continue ambient water quality monitoring.

Project achievements and outcomes:

Formation and meetings of Technical Working Group
7 aquaponic units installed, maintained and monitored
Regular water quality monitoring
Sediment, plant biomass and algae sampling undertaken
1 x Community Information Session held
1 x School Information Session held
Display material, posters and preliminary results distributed
Landholders, stakeholders and residents engaged for future involvement and activities
